I have strep throat. Today we had to dig up 5$ in change so that I could see a doctor and get medication from the local free clinic. I graduated from a good school and am trying to start my own business, but have little $ to put in it.
I work part time in retail, and my hours have been cut back from 15-25 a week to 5-6 hours a week, despite the fact that my store and company are doing well - all of us have been cut back!
My husband has been doing temp work, but has been out of temp work until recently - now he will be trying to work two jobs (one full time, one nearly) to get us by.
I am paying back 30,000$ in student loans. He is still paying his student loans as well. I get 147$ in food stamps a month, and between that and my paycheck, we do ok, but have no savings. However we are 1 broken down car, 1 serious health issue or 1 missed paycheck from being totally fucked.
I do laundry at a friend’s house because I rarely have the cash to use the machine in my building. Most of my friends and I have little or no health insurance, and many that do barely get by because even if they DO get sick, they can’t take time off to properly heal and wind up chronically injured/sick, and then have to work through that, or else they lose either money or the insurance!
Yet we are still lucky, we have friends and family who can help, and who we help in turn. We just want to do ok, and live happily. We are not greedy, we are not lazy, we are not trying to get a free ride.
We are the 99%, and we shouldn’t have to eke life out in fear!
