“I’m a 16 year old junior in a small, public high school. Because I was told you must work hard to be successful, I work extremely hard in all my classes and am in the top 20% of my class with a 3.6 GPA. My state is considered to be the one of the top in providing financial aid for students. Even so, I’m scared none of this will be enough to get me into a worthwhile in-state university. My parents, both having worked full time for 10+ years, are considerd to be making "TOO MUCH MONEY” (even though we live paycheck-to-paycheck with a $30K a year take-home income) for be to be able to apply for many financial aid programs.
I'l be the first in my family to go to a college. That is, if I go.
And my 15 year old sister has a psychological disorder and it is, of course, difficult to pay for her medicine and medical bills. My other two 25+ years old sisters, with two kids each, are without a degree and unemployed, relying on our parents and their significant others to survive.
WHAT KIND OF “AMERICAN DREAM” IS IT WHEN A TEENAGER CARRIES THE BURDEN OF WORRYING FOR HER/HIS FAMILY?
