We are the 99 percent. We are getting kicked out of our homes. We are forced to choose between groceries and rent. We are denied quality medical care. We are suffering from environmental pollution. We are working long hours for little pay and no rights, if we're working at all. We are getting nothing while the other 1 percent is getting everything. We are the 99 percent.

I am 26 years old.  I live in a rural northern town with warm people and cold winters.  I work 2 jobs.  I have never saved money.

I am loaded with student loan debt.  Close enough to the poverty line to qualify for food stamps and state healthcare, and forever grateful to live in a state with amazing social programs.  In the recent past, I have had to choose between paying rent and buying cold medicine.  Heating my house or paying utilities.  Paying bills or buying groceries.  I can count on one hand the number of times my bank account held more than $1,000.  I have lived paycheck to paycheck since I left college.

My job security is knowing how to grow food, since people will always need to eat.  My 401(k) is knowing how to make fires to keep warm and how to preserve food to last through the winter.  I am able to eat well right now because of the free produce my roommates and I bring home from our jobs.  I know this makes me one of the lucky ones.

I am the 99%.  I occupy the fields and the woods.  I won’t give up hope for the future.
