I’m a lifelong New Yorker who for 6 years for half the pay of my male predecessor before being forced to train my replacements in Mumbai and being ‘laid off’ when I asked for a fair raise.
I was lucky to quickly find a new job in nonprofit publishing for under $40K. I live paycheck to paycheck, but am grateful to have health benefits and opportunity to grow.

My boyfriend graduated from a state college a year early and is getting his Masters at an Ivy League school. His student loans barely cover his tuition, rent and expenses and he will owe $80k+ when he’s done. His mother has cancer, was laid off and her unemployment just ran out. She has been repeatedly turned down for SSI. My salary and his loans cover our needs for now - but what happens when he graduates?

We are the 99%.
