I’m one of the lucky ones - I live in Canada.
I have a union job that I’ve held for 10 years, and it gives me drug and dental insurance, as long as I don’t use too much. It pays me about $1500/month, in a good month.
I couldn’t get a job with my university degree, so I went to community college. (I couldn’t get a job in that field, either, and it’s been five years since I graduated.) I paid off some student loans with low rate credit cards. (the student loan people emptied my bank account without even asking me, the credit card companies acted a bit more politely…at first) My minimum payments are about $600/month.
A 1 bedroom apartment in a sketchy, but not outright dangerous area of town, is about $800/month. (A studio is around $700, and if you don’t mind being shot and riding public transit for well over an hour each way to get to work, you can get one a bit less, but the transit pass will eat up over $100/month. Rooming houses without fire escapes are a bit cheaper, too. It’s not much to work with, but I don’t have the collection agency constantly calling me, at least.)
My friends all think I’m rich.
It’s not the 99%, but you can see it from here.
