My husband has been laid off 3x in 4 ½ years. He works hard as an independent contractor. That keeps us fed, housed and mostly above water, but we live paycheck to paycheck. Our savings are dwindling.
No health insurance. No COBRA ($1,000 a month? Please.) I used to take access to health care for granted. Now I feel guilty for spending money on seeing a doctor if I get sick.
We keep waiting for it to get better, for the job offer to come, for the benefits we’ve always had to return. We are still waiting. We are slowly sinking.
I am the first person in my family who DIDN’T want her kids to go to a 4 year uni. I encouraged them to go to trade school instead, because I felt they stood a better chance of gainful employment afterwards. College can come later.
And we’re the lucky ones? We are. WE ARE THE LUCKY ONES. We have so much, relatively speaking. We are fed, housed, we have a little money for extras like cat food and vet bills. We are hanging on, hard. We are lucky and we know how fickle luck can be. We are the 99%.
