We are the 99 percent. We are getting kicked out of our homes. We are forced to choose between groceries and rent. We are denied quality medical care. We are suffering from environmental pollution. We are working long hours for little pay and no rights, if we're working at all. We are getting nothing while the other 1 percent is getting everything. We are the 99 percent.

“My mom left my dad cuz he hit her. Then she had to go to work all the time and I didn’t see her.  I was 2 and my big brother was 4.”

(I get to stay home now, thanks to my current partner.  I pay for “extras” (cars, phones) with odd jobs - I make more working for my neighbors than in a “legitimate” job.  I’m not on welfare - someone needs it more, and I couldn’t stay home anymore if I was.  I’d have to work.) *

“Mommy can’t hear me.  I remember when she could, but then her hearing aids broke.  She grows food for us and puts it in jars so we never run out.  She takes care of us.  I love my mommy.”

“Use it up, wear it out.  Make it do, or do without.” **

* I prefer not to work for an outside employer, not from laziness, but because I want to be 100% available to my children.  As a single mom, this is important to me.

** This is the saying that got my grandparents through the Great Depression.  It’s what we live by to keep our heads above water today.
