I am 20 years old. I attend a city university but pay out-of-state tuition. I am lucky: my father makes a good salary, my family has health insurance, my parents can pay for my education. Recently, my mother had a major dental procedure and it exceeded our insurance limit, and they had to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket. Our downstairs carpeting was damaged by Hurricane Irene, and had to be replaced: another few thousand dollars. My parents are now in debt again. They can recover (eventually), but there are so many others who can’t.

We are the lucky ones, but we are still the 99%.
