We are the 99 percent. We are getting kicked out of our homes. We are forced to choose between groceries and rent. We are denied quality medical care. We are suffering from environmental pollution. We are working long hours for little pay and no rights, if we're working at all. We are getting nothing while the other 1 percent is getting everything. We are the 99 percent.

I was almost debt-free when I was struck by a major medical crisis at the age of 37.
After a long recovery, I am back to work. My paycheck now supports seven people - none of whom are my partner, spouse, or children.
My once modest debt has grown exponentially. I fear for my health and have no idea how I will pay debt, save, and retire.

I’m certainly not asking for any kind of handout. I’m just asking for a level playing field. I got myself into debt, I just want a fair shot at paying it off sometime before I die.

At 21 years old, I am…
-One semester from graduating college with a degree no one seems to hire
-In massive debt because of that once “dream degree”
-About to become a mother to a baby whose illness has gotten us booted off government health insurance…at 9 months pregnant…
-Scared for our future

Our disease is nothing compared to theirs of greed and selfishness. This country was not founded to suffer like this. The people supposed to be protecting us are the ones EXPLOITING US. We chose daily gas or food or rent because they isn’t enough for everything. I want a better life for my children. I want a government I can trust to govern us. I want to survive. I want to not be afraid of my future. THE AMERICAN DREAM IS NOW MY NIGHTMARE. I AM THE 99% AND I AM TIRED OF THIS SHIT.

I graduated high school with honors in the top 5% of my class. I attend a top-ranked university, seeking two degrees. I’m only halfway done with college, and I have a 3.65 GPA and $25,924 in debt.
I’m currently taking 17 credits. I work 20 hours a week. I volunteer at an after school program for underprivileged kids in a poor neighborhood.

I live with my older sister, and she pays way more than half the rent. She pays for our internet, electricity, and cell phone bills.

My single mother works two jobs. She took at a $10,000 loan to help pay for my education, but she hasn’t been able to pay any of it back. She pays for my health insurance.

My father can’t cosign for me because he’s still paying back his own student loans. He recently missed three weeks of work due to illness, had emergency heart surgery, and can’t afford his bills. He pays for my car insurance.
Last year I lived on campus and earned minimum wage. After paying atrociously high rent, I barely had enough money to buy food. My boyfriend invited me over to dinner every night so I wouldn’t have to buy groceries.

I’m dependent on everyone else.

I’m one of the lucky ones.

All I want is a good job and a well-earned degree, a family, a wonderful husband and kids, but I don’t want to raise children in a world like this.

I’m terrified for my future.

I am the 99%.

I’ll be 25  this month.  I have a BACHELOR’S degree yet I cannot get a job in my field.  "No experience" they tell me.  I have a $50,000 education but apparently that’s not enough.  I haven’t paid my school loan in 6 months.  WHY? It didn’t help me out.  I have $8000 in credit card debt.  Not from buying nice things, but from putting gas in my car and food on my table.  I lie to make my job seem more glamorous because I’m ashamed.  Ashamed that all of my prized possessions are on Craigslist (even my car) because I STILL don’t know how I’m going to pay bills or eat next week.

I’ve been living in rented rooms since 2004, the year I graduated with my Masters in Publication Design. We need to change the wage structure and education structure in this country fast. We need to hold government AND universities more accountable in terms of wages and helping Americans obtain JOBS pertaining to their academic experience.
