We are the 99 percent. We are getting kicked out of our homes. We are forced to choose between groceries and rent. We are denied quality medical care. We are suffering from environmental pollution. We are working long hours for little pay and no rights, if we're working at all. We are getting nothing while the other 1 percent is getting everything. We are the 99 percent.

My mom went from a trailer in east Texas to a law degree form the University of Texas by the time she was 26 (at 53 she has just finished paying off her student loans). Despite being a well respected attorney, her self-employment lends minimal health coverage and no retirement- I’ve watched her teeth fall out and watched her suffer through the worsening pains of arthritis for 9 hour days- worst of all is her fear of NEVER being able to retire. Of course, it wouldn’t be a problem if she could legally marry her girlfriend of 12 years and receive the legal benefits therein. She said to me recently, “I thought if I did everything right, worked my ass off and jumped through all the hoops I could make it… I guess it just wasn’t like that.”
She believed in the American dream. It betrayed her.
She is the 99%.
